WHY CHRISTIANS MUST LIVE MISSIONALLY

When we examine the Scriptures,
whether carefully or cursorily, we find that all
of life is missional
and is intended to be lived missionally. As far
as the Scriptures are concerned, one can not come
to
any other conclusion or submission than this.
First, we find that God Himself
is essentially missional both in His being and in
His works. His attributes
and works confirm that this is indeed the case.
Although His works are many, they revolve around
His missional
work. In fact, His missional work is the one story
that runs through and dominates both Testaments. Second, Jesus Christ came primary
and specifically on this missional assignment (Matt.
I:21; Jn.1:29;
3:16). He lived and died missionally. His life, atoning
death and resurrection represented the fulfilment
and culmination of God’s missional work.
Third, Jesus commissioned us His
followers to take and tell this missional message
to the whole world
(Matt. 28 : 18-20 ), for which it was meant (see
Lk. 2:10-12 ); Jn. 1:29; 3:16). This commission as
well as the need to obey it fully are critical to
the fulfilment of God’s missional purpose for
all mankind. The success of God’s missional
work in the world depends on our complete obedience
to this commission.
Lastly, our new life in Jesus Christ
demands that we live missionally (Col.2:6; Phil.
1:27; 1 Jn. 2:6).
This affects everything we do (Col.3:17; 1 Cor. 10:31).
Our motive, desire, thought, character, speech, work,
action, etc., must all serve the missional purpose
of God for us and for all mankind. Whether we are
into politics, science, business, education, family,
pastoral work, etc., our faith in Christ demands
that we talk and act missionally. Therefore, let
us live our lives missionally, whatever we do and
wherever we find ourselves. This is what our heavenly
Father does. It is what our loving Saviour commissioned
us to do and how He expects us to live our lives
as His true followers.
It is most fitting then to conclude
with the exact words of Scripture: “So whether you eat or
drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory
of God (1 Cor. 10:31). |
