THE EARLY CHURCH PROCLAIMED CHRIST ALONE
ALWAYS
One of the things for which the early
Church stands out is that they proclaimed Jesus Christ
alone as the Saviour
of the world. He was their sole message wherever they
went and on every occasion.
Peter proclaimed Him as the Lord and Christ while he
was explaining Pentecost (Acts 2:22-36), the healing of
the
cripple at the temple (Acts 3:11-26), and while addressing
the Sanhedrin (Acts 5:27-42), and the household of Cornelius
the centurion (Acts 10:1-33).
Philip preached Him everywhere he went (Acts 8:5,25,40),
as well as Paul and his companions (Acts 13:13-41; 14:6-7,21;
17:2-3,16-33), and Apollos (Acts 18:27-28).
In spite of severe opposition, the early disciples never
stopped proclaiming that Jesus is the Christ (Acts 5:42).
For them, there is no Saviour except Jesus Christ (Acts
4:1-22), and no message other than Him.
Do we still proclaim Jesus Christ as the only Saviour
of the world today as the early Church did? Do we give
Him
the same place in our preaching like them? Is He the sole
content and goal of our preaching today as He was for them?
We must rediscover the place of Jesus Christ in our preaching
today in order to experience the growth and power that
the early Church did. The sole purpose of our preaching
today must be to proclaim Jesus Christ as the only Saviour
of the world as obtained in the early Church. It is a fundamental
error not to make Jesus Christ the sole content and goal
of preaching today. The restoration of the Church’s
growth, power and effectiveness depends on it.
